Lucca – 30 km from Viareggio

Inside its walls, Lucca jealously preserve an artistic heritage of great value that makes it a destination of international tourism. The city has ancient roman origins that are still recognizable in the layout of the main streets of the historic centre. Lucca has been the only city to keep an independence from Florence and the powerful Medici family throughout the Middle Ages and beyond, during the Grand Duchy of Tuscany until the Unification of Italy. Main attraction of Lucca are the ancient walls of the XV – XVII century, preserved almost untouched during centuries. The walls encircle the whole old town for about 4 km. Today the walls have been turned into pedestrian and bicycle area from which you can enjoy a beautiful sight over the city. The historic centre is rich in medieval and renaissance palaces, suggestive churches and towers. Among the most visited sites there are the Guinigi Tower, the Duomo of Saint Martin, the Ducal Palace, the wonderful Piazza dell'Anfiteatro of elliptical shape and Via Fillungo, ancient medieval street today heart of shopping in town.
